European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
